Whether you’re in Sydney for a holiday or to work, one of the best things about the city is all the quirky bars in the inner suburbs. There is nothing better than stumbling upon a cool new hangout with friends. We’re not going to take the joy out of the discovery for you but here are a few bars to get you started.
For a view: Opera Bar Sydney
If you only go to one bar in Sydney make it this one. Situated right outside the opera house there is absolutely no better view of the harbour bridge than from this bar. Drinks are slightly higher priced than other bars in Sydney but not too much to not make it worth your while. So get your friends together, order some cocktails and snap some selfies.
For social media bragging rights : Baxters Inn
One of the coolest bars in Sydney that would escape the notice of all but the savviest; an underground speakeasy tucked just off George street this is the place to go for whiskey and an ever-changing menu of cocktail which you can sip at your whisky barrel table.
For a night of fun: Frankies
Start your night out eating pizza in 60’s style booths and finish it with dancing to live music or a host of DJs. Frankies is a bar you go to for after work wind down or to impress a date. The nostalgia is strong in this one with themed decor and rock and roll karaoke every Tuesday.
For feeling like a hipster : Black Sheep Newtown
From the leather walls to the board games, Black Sheep is really one of a kind. Ask the bartender to recommend a drink and settle down to play a game of connect four whilst eating shaker fries. Set in the heart of Sydney’s most hipster suburb this bar is a place for people watching.
To chill out : Hemmingway’s Manly
With its window seats overlooking the ocean, literary-themed cocktails, and bookshelf-lined walls there is no pleasanter place to while away a few hours. A hop skip and a jump from a quieter section of beach, you can leave the bar and have sand between your toes faster than you can say “Well that was lovely.” Purchase one of the hop on hop off ferry passes to spend the day exploring Sydney harbour and end your afternoon here to reflect on the day.
For something cosier : This Must Be The Place
With a menu full of interesting cocktails and bar food you didn’t even know you wanted this bar is one for a quieter night out. Set on bustling Oxford Street This Must Be The Place is the brainchild of two experienced bartenders who were Australian finalists in the World Class cocktail making competition. Think sophisticated but casual, the perfect place to take a date or to show your friends how cool you are.
For live music : The Little Guy Glebe
With open mic nights and live music (and trivia once a week), this little gem is the place to be on week nights. You will hear everything from local up and coming singer-songwriters to five piece jazz bands playing here. Kick back with a cold drink and a complimentary bowl of BBQ popcorn but get there early as this cosy bar gets full quickly.
For dancing : The Argyle
The Argyle has been one of Sydney’s favourite hotspots for years, with their live DJ’s every Friday night and events like salsa dancing and movies throughout the week. With four different bars inside and one in the expansive cobblestone courtyard, you can choose if you want a club experience or drinks and conversation in the fresh air.
